At the heart of the world famous Espace Killy area, Tignes is a high mountain resort with a long, long season. The winter ski season starts in November and ends in May and here at Snowfinders we have skied back to the resort on the Trolles run on the May bank holiday. The glacier serviced by the Grande Motte funicular is open for summer skiing all year round.
Some may regard Tignes as an ugly purpose built blot on the landscape, and admittedly it's not the prettiest place in the world. Indeed, the Bec Rouge in Tignes Le Lac is a wart on mother nature's beautiful face. Having said that we're here to ski not take part in some architectural critique. Those wanting ski convenience in a high altitude snow sure resort, need to turn a blind eye to the architecture!!
Tignes offers a large ski area that is suitable for early intermediates to experts. Take the Aeroski Telecabine in the morning and head up to the Toviere where the option is to ski down on the Campanules to Val Claret or head over to Val d'Isere . Another day head up to the L'Aiguille Percee better known as the "Eye of the Needle" and ski down to Tignes Les Brevieres. With views of Lac Du Chervil on your way down, this run offers stunning scenery. Take lunch at La Sachette( 50 metres over the bridge and on the left) which is cheaper and better than the more convenient restaurants on the bridge. In the afternoon discover the more traditional area of the Tignes Les Brevieres skiing.
The Espace Killy is a large ski area and has more than enough skiing for even the most dedicated. With legendary off piste, the Espace Killy offers something for nearly everyone. Bullish beginners will prosper with plenty of great blues and reds to progress to, although nervous skiers might find the area limiting .
